NEOHEMAS 1-25-15 Training Session

Great session of recreational violence today but first let me give the report from Saturday…
Evelyn, Louis and I on Saturday.

We started out on German longsword. After a quick review we went over uberlaufen and countering Zornhau with Krumphau. We then jumped straight into our navaja work. This time our focus was on the Matador’s Thrust and floretazo so we donned our masks and got busy thrusting and cutting to the face with glee.

We then hit on the style of Irish stickplay found in the 1905 San Francisco Call focusing on the series of attacks and defenses against them. We ended our session with a focus on ancient arts…Greek and Roman boxing and gladiatorial combat.

Today it was just Chris and I…

2 rounds shadow boxing
2 rounds focus pads
2 rounds three count sparring drill
1 round boxing
1 round savate
1 round freestyle footwork
1 round partnered footwork drill

Since we had such fun with the ancient boxing on Saturday we went over the same material on Sunday, basic stances and some attack and defense from them. This was one of my original forays into the concept of western martial arts many years ago when I first got started, I wish I would have stuck with it…where would I be now?

We ended our session with a heavy dose of gladiatorial combat working with the training shields weapons I have been working on the past few weeks. Gear is decent but needs to be heavier, especially the shields but good to start with for now. Probably the most fun I have ever had training. Interesting how the different sets of gear match up even with the non-historical match ups we played with. Definitely will be part of our Sunday violence for the foreseeable future.

NEOHEMAS session 8-24-14

Just Chris and I again…

2 rounds shadow box
3 rounds focus gloves
4 rounds boxing
1 round savate

The sparring has become exceptionally active between Chris and I. Tons and tons of footwork and working for position is fairly small space. Absolutely no rest in the round at all. If we clinch we fight out of it…really some great progress being made I think.

We spent some time on dirty boxing and by dirty I mean illegal stuff for any comp…headbutts, elbows, groin shots etc.

We finished the session by reviewing some of the savate kicks we have worked on. with a focus on very low (ankle height) kicks.

NEOHEMAS Session 7-27-14

Just Chris and I today…

2 rounds shadow boxing
4 rounds boxing
1 round savate
3 rounds focus gloves.
We then worked on getting a lead leg fouette low line off faster and more accurately. Weather was getting rough so we cut out a little early. Minutes later, our power was knocked out.
On Friday Chris was out, we did 10 rounds of striking with plenty of sparring then worked a bit on asp baton using various sources from Scottish Regimental Broadsword to Cossack saber

NEOHEMAS session 7-20-14

On Friday Chris and I got together for some focus glove work and navaja review.

On Sunday, it was just Chris and I again….
2 rounds shadow boxing
3 rounds focus gloves
5 rounds light boxing sparring.
Spending a lot of time getting the overhand in this week since it is a punch Chris does not use often and I live by it:)
Next we worked on some savate, specifically gaining ground with the fouette, coup de pied bas and chasse.
We ended the session with the navaja once again, this time re reviewed and worked to perfect our three most used fighting postures…the Andalusian, the Castillian and the Baretaro.

NEOHEMAS Session 7-13-14

First off on Thursday Chris and I got together for a training session. Chris is still one armed due to a recent surgery so we worked a whole bunch of one armed boxing drills using the focus pads and empty hand. We ended out session with some navaja which we repeated in today’s session.

Today Gary, Jason and I…
2 rounds shadow boxing
1 round focus gloves
4 rounds boxing sparring
1 round freestyle footwork
We then got on our shinguards and had a nice refresher course on savate’s coup de pied bas or oblique kick to the shin.
We ended our session with a focus on delivering the point in our navaja work plus some drills from garrote Larense adapted for the shorter blade.

NEOHEMAS Session 5-18-14

Just Chris and I this week. While it is real nice to have a full house, we get a whole lot accomplished when we have basically a private session. We really get to focus on improving Chris’s skills and strategies during sessions like this plus I get a much better insight into coaching. I get to learn just about the same amount as he does.

2 rounds shadow boxing
3 rounds focus gloves
3 rounds boxing  (all rounds fought mirror image, Chris southpaw, me orthodox stance, 1st round Chris actively circle tot he outside, 2nd round I do the same and 3rd round we both try to circle and block the other.)
1 round freestyle foot work to allow my heart to stop trying to rip out of my chest.
1 round savate, again mirror image with active circling to the outside by both of us.
We then worked out coup de pied bas and fouette from the outside circling movement, worked on both catching kicks and not getting our kicks caught.
We ended the session with some work on sambo, two interesting anklelock variations and several leg lock counters to rear naked choke or back mount.

NEOHEMAS 5-4-14

Just Chris and I this week…

2 rounds shadow boxing
3 rounds focus gloves
 4 rounds boxing
1 round savate.
All focus pad work and sparring was done orthodox vs southpaw. Chris the southpaw got to work on the benefits of being a south paw while i glued myself to an orthodox stance (normally I switch my stance). We payed special attention to his circling to my outside, keeping his lead foot to the outside of my every second.
After our round work we took a deeper look at the extended guard and milling and how they work together.
During our single round of savate I took a fouette to the liver. As I told Chris after the round, had I not been hit so many time in my life that shot would have probably put he away. A little tender today but feeling better than expected.

NEOHEMAS 4-13-14

Just Chris and I today…
2 rounds shadow boxing
3 rounds focus pads
2 rounds 3 count cadence drill

Our focus glove drills were a bit different this week. Normal as the fedder I control almost allt he movement but today we worked on Chris stepping off to his lead side after every combination he threw with me following him.. It had a differnet feel and work some important concepts.

We also worked on fine tuning our fouette (round kick), mainly maintaining our balance and our return after after the kick is thrown.

We ended our session by taking advantage of the fantastic weather and going outside to swing some sparth axe. Always one of my favorite things to work on. We covered our basic wards then went into lesson one as set by the Cateran Society and worked a few variations.

NEOHEMAS 4-6-14

David, Jo, Jason, and I today…

2 rounds shadowboxing
2 rounds boxing
1 round savate
2 rounds focus gloves

We then worked on displacement before throwing the fouette in savate…one two straight punch combo followed by displacement fouette or displacement fouette, chasse or just displacement chasse.

Next out came the navaja trainers. We worked on a simple counter cut defense to a straight thrust and also defesne against having your knife hand grabbed.

We finished hte session with David working with Jo on some boxing and Jason and I doing some tomahawk (David also joined in here). Basic cutting pattern,g rips and a whole lot of talk and work about binding, getting stuck and what to do about it.

On Saturday Matt and I worked on some tomahawk (will this be the summer of the hawk?) Shillelagh in the style of Footpad and the Cane as well as three takedowns to go along with pugilism,

NEOHEMAS session 2-30-14

David, Jason and I today…

2 rounds shadow boxing
1 rounds focus gloves
3 rounds boxing
1 round savate
1 round partnered footwork
1 round freestyle footwork

We worked a short while on the four quadrant punching drill we did
few weeks back and got a short video to show just what I’m talking
about: http://youtu.be/Ds-mDze5H5Y

We then completely switched gears and brought out the training spears
for a quick recap of our skills before doing a little bouting. Since
we were indoors with spears of roughly 6′ length our focus was on
Fiore’s plays. Had some real excellent success using the Mezza Porta
di Ferro (Middle Iron Door), so after the bouting we went over this
again.

We ended the session with some work using the Regimental Highland
broadsword system as put forth by the Cateran society. Basic guards,
shifting the leg, compass attacks. Looking forward tot he nicer
weather so we can get outside with this.
