NEOHEMAS Session 4-26-15

Chris Matt and I…
2 rounds shadow boxing
4 rounds focus gloves
4 rounds 3 count cadence drill

2 rounds 1-2 punching on the focus gloves for Chris.
We then reviewed our Roman and Greek boxing, basic stances and some attacks then putting on some headgear and working a few combinations.

Chris had to leave early so I went over our basic gladiator work with Matt for the first time, giving him a chance to fight in the various armatura that we have the equipment for.

We worked a bit on the basic mechanics for the thrust and lunge which lead us into some spear work, going over Fiore’s spear material plus some from the Cossack method. We ended the session with some knife, cutting against targets with real force.

NEOHEMAS session 7-20-14

On Friday Chris and I got together for some focus glove work and navaja review.

On Sunday, it was just Chris and I again….
2 rounds shadow boxing
3 rounds focus gloves
5 rounds light boxing sparring.
Spending a lot of time getting the overhand in this week since it is a punch Chris does not use often and I live by it:)
Next we worked on some savate, specifically gaining ground with the fouette, coup de pied bas and chasse.
We ended the session with the navaja once again, this time re reviewed and worked to perfect our three most used fighting postures…the Andalusian, the Castillian and the Baretaro.

NEOHEMAS Session 7-13-14

First off on Thursday Chris and I got together for a training session. Chris is still one armed due to a recent surgery so we worked a whole bunch of one armed boxing drills using the focus pads and empty hand. We ended out session with some navaja which we repeated in today’s session.

Today Gary, Jason and I…
2 rounds shadow boxing
1 round focus gloves
4 rounds boxing sparring
1 round freestyle footwork
We then got on our shinguards and had a nice refresher course on savate’s coup de pied bas or oblique kick to the shin.
We ended our session with a focus on delivering the point in our navaja work plus some drills from garrote Larense adapted for the shorter blade.

NEOHEMAS 4-6-14

David, Jo, Jason, and I today…

2 rounds shadowboxing
2 rounds boxing
1 round savate
2 rounds focus gloves

We then worked on displacement before throwing the fouette in savate…one two straight punch combo followed by displacement fouette or displacement fouette, chasse or just displacement chasse.

Next out came the navaja trainers. We worked on a simple counter cut defense to a straight thrust and also defesne against having your knife hand grabbed.

We finished hte session with David working with Jo on some boxing and Jason and I doing some tomahawk (David also joined in here). Basic cutting pattern,g rips and a whole lot of talk and work about binding, getting stuck and what to do about it.

On Saturday Matt and I worked on some tomahawk (will this be the summer of the hawk?) Shillelagh in the style of Footpad and the Cane as well as three takedowns to go along with pugilism,

Busy weekend….

Saturday had a new guy named Matt start what will probably be a bi-monthly session on boxing and shillelagh. We worked some basic body mechanic a theory for BKB then switched gears for an overview of Irish stick settling on foot pad and cane as a starting point. Matt is a big guy, once he gets the body mechanics down for power generation he is going to hit like a freight train.
Sunday, Chris, Jason, Gary and Gary’s cousin (I a bad with names)
2 rounds shadow boxing
some work on shifting and changing stance and most important, why we absolutely have to do it if we want to be the best fighter we can be.
We then worked the displacement step from savate…a jab>straight rear>step out>fouette median or bas. Stressing the importance of the step being rather long to defend against the takedown and counter strikes.
Our grappling this week consisted of this no jacket sambo throw:
We ended the session with the navaja. We did a review of everything we have ever covered and I am happy to say that a whole lot of it has stuck! Now we just have to get good at it.
Next week Savate and Russian Fisticuffs at Nord Schlag in Alberta Ca.. Really looking forward to this!

NEOHEMAS Session 12-22-13

Chris and I today…

2 rounds shadow boxing
2 rounds focus gloves
3 rounds 3 count cadence drill
Chris has a fight coming up in Feb, so we are really hitting the boxing quite hard, pun intended. Our focus this week was on distance and closing off lines via different attitudes (boxing stances). We started with Mendoza’s guard making sure we had a good inclining upper body and square stance making sure to give a false sense of distance. We then jumped right into Carpentiers stance which was very much like Joe Louis’s…this particular attitude is very good at shutting down a mirror imaged fighter. Since Chris is a leftie, it is always a good thing to have another thing up the proverbial sleeve.
We pulled out the navaja and took a look at some of the concepts of distance came into play and worked a few ideas into the boxing.
At around 1 1/2 hours it was a shortt session but very very productive.
Merry Christmas!

NEOHEMAS 11-24-13 Session

Chris, Gary, Jason and I today. Jason still injured so he only took part in a small amount on training but kept time for our rounds and generally helped out. Brutally cold in our training area today but we have come to expect that we either broil or freeze.

2 rounds shadow boxing (Chris absolutely drilled me in the jaw after sidestep…why do I do this?)
2 rounds boxing
We then worked a punch knee combo from combat sambo and elbow knee combo from Savate defense. We ended out striking training with an interesting savate defense kicking combo while on the ground against the legs of a standing aggressor.
Onto sambo…no kurtka today but we did use our belts. Two takedowns, the first a run through black leg trip after a pull to the “wrong” side. The second a ski lift type of throw off a belt grab.
We ended our session with the navaja…Sevellian star, figure eight movements, matador’s thrust and floretazo were the focus for todays session.
