NEOHEMAS Session 1-31-15

Louis and I today…

Quick review of some German longsword material including the versetzen, uberlaufen and durchlaufen. Again the lower ceiling making longsword a real not-winter sort of thing for us.

Next up about a half hours work on gladiatorial combat with a focus on Thraex, Murmillo and Dimachaerus amatura. Really really fun. We added to this a bit of Roman/Greek boxing for s nice session of ancient combat. Just need to add some wrestling for a full program of AMA.

The mountain axes finally woke up after an extended hibernation. We did some work on basic attack and defenses using a variety of axes and comparing the weight and handling aspects of a few different styles. WE also had a nice discussion of thrusting with the head of the axe.

We ended the session with one of my favorite weapons…the e-tool. We worked on the four basic attacks and defenses for them, then we worked some actual plays or techniques, shovel vs shovel and shovel vs knife. We ended the session with a bit of e-tool bouting, great fun as always.

Louis is off for Australia for the Spring and Summer so we won’t see him again until the Fall. Hopefully he will find someone down there to train with for that time. Anyone in or near Adelaide?

I canceled Sunday’s session due to the heavy snowfall.

NEOHEMAS 5-11-14

Chris and I were joined by a couple of long distance folks, Cain and Daniel this weekend….

2 rounds shadow boxing
5 rounds focus gloves, lot’s of material to go over for the two visitors.
3 rounds 3 count cadence drills
New guys are always great…nice to have Chris get a chance to coach some today as well.
Chris then took us through a couple of defenses against a single leg take down and a few subs from these defenses.
Daniel and Cain were mostly looking to play with longswords so after we tortured them with our standard unarmed work we went outside and enjoyed the nuce weather with some steel in our hands.

NEOHEMAS session 10-14-13

Chris, Gary, Jason and I today….

2 rounds shadow boxing
2 rounds savate with no safety equip. just good control
Russian fisticuff drill called anvils…with a name like that you can surely expect some bruising:)
 fisticuffs
Grappling up next. Last week we worked a sambo takedown called the Cuban, this week we worked on a variation of this. The Cuban is an inside leg trip, from this we did a rolling inverted kneebar.
This lead to getting the same sub from a half guard position as well. This all fell in line with out Leglocktober theme.
Wrestling season coming up for Gary so we wanted tog et him some mat time…Chris took Gary through three rounds of coached grappling.
We ended our session historical…for a change we went through the first three masters of Fiore’s spear. It has been years but still as fun as I remembered it. Last up was a review of our progress in Von Auerswald’s 1539 Ringer Kunst manual.

NEOHEMAS session 9-15-13

David, Gary, Jason and I today…

2 rounds shadow boxing
1 round focus mitts
2 rounds boxing
We then worked on the concept of rhythm in our boxing, getting our punches closer together rather than faster was one aspect of our rhythm training borrowing concepts from music theory…we also worked on breaking our rhythm as a tactic during sparring. Last for our striking was a little work from the clinch, tying up the arms to clear a path for heavy body and back of the head shots.
Our grappling today was Von Auerswald again…reviewing the first series and getting into the Durchlauffen and Arm Winding this time. Great deal of fun…will continue with this.

NEOHEMAS session 9-12-13

Gary, Jason, Sophia and I today…Sophia is 10 so she had to skip af good deal of what we did but she still got her feet more than a little wet.

2 round shadow boxing
1 round focus mitts
2 rounds boxing
2 rounds savate
2 rounds partnered footwork drill
Since this is our sambo and am wrestling off season we decided to work a different style and jumped in to Fabian Von Auerswald’s manual from 1539:
This is a manual that I have worked with on and off since around 1998 when Pete Kautz first sent me a copy of it. I have not touched it for about a year and I think this whole year with a strong focus on sambo has helped me get in tune with my grappelarity(tm). We only went over a small portion but something must have clicked upstairs, everything was clear and I was seeing cognate techniques and concepts easier than ever. The guys seemed to enjoy it as well.
Sophia got a chance to review her sambo lessons and show off some of her slick moves on her old man. She is really getting better each time we train which is very nice to see.
