NEOHEMAS Session 7-27-14

Just Chris and I today…

2 rounds shadow boxing
4 rounds boxing
1 round savate
3 rounds focus gloves.
We then worked on getting a lead leg fouette low line off faster and more accurately. Weather was getting rough so we cut out a little early. Minutes later, our power was knocked out.
On Friday Chris was out, we did 10 rounds of striking with plenty of sparring then worked a bit on asp baton using various sources from Scottish Regimental Broadsword to Cossack saber

NEOHEMAS session 7-20-14

On Friday Chris and I got together for some focus glove work and navaja review.

On Sunday, it was just Chris and I again….
2 rounds shadow boxing
3 rounds focus gloves
5 rounds light boxing sparring.
Spending a lot of time getting the overhand in this week since it is a punch Chris does not use often and I live by it:)
Next we worked on some savate, specifically gaining ground with the fouette, coup de pied bas and chasse.
We ended the session with the navaja once again, this time re reviewed and worked to perfect our three most used fighting postures…the Andalusian, the Castillian and the Baretaro.

NEOHEMAS 5-11-14

Chris and I were joined by a couple of long distance folks, Cain and Daniel this weekend….

2 rounds shadow boxing
5 rounds focus gloves, lot’s of material to go over for the two visitors.
3 rounds 3 count cadence drills
New guys are always great…nice to have Chris get a chance to coach some today as well.
Chris then took us through a couple of defenses against a single leg take down and a few subs from these defenses.
Daniel and Cain were mostly looking to play with longswords so after we tortured them with our standard unarmed work we went outside and enjoyed the nuce weather with some steel in our hands.

NEOHEMAS 5-4-14

Just Chris and I this week…

2 rounds shadow boxing
3 rounds focus gloves
 4 rounds boxing
1 round savate.
All focus pad work and sparring was done orthodox vs southpaw. Chris the southpaw got to work on the benefits of being a south paw while i glued myself to an orthodox stance (normally I switch my stance). We payed special attention to his circling to my outside, keeping his lead foot to the outside of my every second.
After our round work we took a deeper look at the extended guard and milling and how they work together.
During our single round of savate I took a fouette to the liver. As I told Chris after the round, had I not been hit so many time in my life that shot would have probably put he away. A little tender today but feeling better than expected.

NEOHEMAS 3-2-14 Training Session

I was supposed to attend Nord Schlag in Edmonton Alberta this past weekend but unfortunately once I got to Chicago I discovered that they canceled my flight to Edmonton and I could not get there until Sunday afternoon…when the even was just about over. After a two hour wait in line with hundreds of angry passengers, I was able to squeeze in on a stand by for a flight back home.

I slept much of Saturday away after being up all night. With the impending bad weather here in Ohio, I decided to just not tell my guys here that I would be home for our regular session.
Luckily Chris forgot I was not going to be here and came out anyway…good thing because I really wanted to do some training after a day of total rest.
2 rounds shadow boxing
3 rounds focus gloves
2 rounds boxing
We then did some work on attitude and closing lines while leaving some open. We then went over the half-round blow from RAF fisticuffs…and interesting two punch combination that is better seen than imagined. I will try to get a video clip of that soon.
 fisticuffs
We ended our session shillelagh in hand…we went over the entire Foot Pad and Cane style as well as Percy Longhursts advice for fighting with a blackthorn. Footpad and the Cane is rather sparse, I like it a great deal but adding the Longhurst material makes it a little more complete.

Busy weekend….

Saturday had a new guy named Matt start what will probably be a bi-monthly session on boxing and shillelagh. We worked some basic body mechanic a theory for BKB then switched gears for an overview of Irish stick settling on foot pad and cane as a starting point. Matt is a big guy, once he gets the body mechanics down for power generation he is going to hit like a freight train.
Sunday, Chris, Jason, Gary and Gary’s cousin (I a bad with names)
2 rounds shadow boxing
some work on shifting and changing stance and most important, why we absolutely have to do it if we want to be the best fighter we can be.
We then worked the displacement step from savate…a jab>straight rear>step out>fouette median or bas. Stressing the importance of the step being rather long to defend against the takedown and counter strikes.
Our grappling this week consisted of this no jacket sambo throw:
We ended the session with the navaja. We did a review of everything we have ever covered and I am happy to say that a whole lot of it has stuck! Now we just have to get good at it.
Next week Savate and Russian Fisticuffs at Nord Schlag in Alberta Ca.. Really looking forward to this!

NEOHEMAS Session 1-12-14

Been very bad about getting my reports out. Last Sunday Just Chris and I again. Good session mainly working on mechanics and polishing what he already knows as well as a nice three count combo from Russian fisticuffs. Still working on getting his striking ready for his fight in Feb.

On Thursday, Gary, Jason and I had a frigid training session. We worked focus mitts, cadence drills and did some grappling before the cold got to us.
On this past Sunday, Gary, David, Jason and I travel south to Akron where I taught a 2 1/2 hour clinic on sambo. I am far from an expert but know enough to give a decent intro clinic which is what I did. My old grappling friend David Doyle invited me down to work with some of the locals.
We started with some nice Russian ROM exercises then an explanation of our grip drill and showed some things to work on. We went through half a dozen or so takedowns and submissions.. Git to see and old friend and meet some people. Hopefully they had as much fun as I had.
David goes for armbar
