NEOHEMAS 10-26-14 Session

Jason and I today…
Lot’s of talking today both about martial arts and unrelated topics. We did get around to working with the tomahawk though. Our method owes as much to Russian entrenching tool as it does to any North American tradition. A bit different than what others are doing I suppose.

I took my big marker and drew a segno on the wall which helped out greatly and we discussed several cutting patterns and adding in footwork as well as off hand attacks with a knife.

Nice ot see the light bulb go off over Jason’s head once he connected the segno to his footwork and defensive material. Easy to assume that everyone can visualize something like the segno but it is not always the case, so this was a nice reminder and now it is up in permanent marker.

We ended with a quick discussion and transference of the axe material right over to the entrenching tool, a weapon/tool than has a place in any car traveling in the Ohio winter.

NEOHEMAS 4-6-14

David, Jo, Jason, and I today…

2 rounds shadowboxing
2 rounds boxing
1 round savate
2 rounds focus gloves

We then worked on displacement before throwing the fouette in savate…one two straight punch combo followed by displacement fouette or displacement fouette, chasse or just displacement chasse.

Next out came the navaja trainers. We worked on a simple counter cut defense to a straight thrust and also defesne against having your knife hand grabbed.

We finished hte session with David working with Jo on some boxing and Jason and I doing some tomahawk (David also joined in here). Basic cutting pattern,g rips and a whole lot of talk and work about binding, getting stuck and what to do about it.

On Saturday Matt and I worked on some tomahawk (will this be the summer of the hawk?) Shillelagh in the style of Footpad and the Cane as well as three takedowns to go along with pugilism,

David, Gary, Jason and I today…

Spent the first half hour going over Gary’s recent 1st place sambo tournie win from last weekend. Found a few things we need to work on, mostly a coach deficit…we all learn from these things. Even though I was not there, the video really helped .
Gary is in the blue kurtka (jacket)
We then took it outside in the humid evening air for some JdP and work with the sparth axe. Mostly review on the JdP material but the sparth axe was new ground and I took David through 5 lessons of the Cateran’s Society’s 10. We ended with a small bit of controlled freeplay with the JdP and a bit of less controlled freeplay with the sparth axes (leather heads are a bit safer).

Session 5-5-13

We had a session on Wed…David, Gary, Jason and I:
shadow boxing
rounds of boxing and savate plus an introduction to knees. We ended the Wed session with a reintro into Footpad and Cane style shillelagh work.

On Sunday, Chris, Gary, Jason and I:
2 rounds shadow boxing
2 rounds boxing
1 round savate
Chris then took us through some nice work clinching and against the wall.
We then went through the 9 offensive stick actions with the shillelagh from Footpad and the Cane.

We ended the session with some work using the sparth axe…basic wards and a few defenses from common attacks. Sparth axe is a summer weapon since it is so large, nice to get swinging it again…I am reminded why Galloglass we all big guys.

Session 8-17-11

Midweek session for Matt and I today. We have been focusing so hard on
sambo for the last month that it was time to take a break and do some
drilling and bouting with weapons for a change.

1 Dussack…we had two spirited bouts uising the PH leather dussacks.
I can feel these bouts in my legs still.

2 Longsword…just went over some basic binds then worked on them in
real time with resistance.

3 Shillelagh…two bouts with this overly fun weapon. We took up the
mats so we made the rule that we were not to go to the ground. Still
a constant struggle much less strategy and more gagression.

4 Sparth axe…we went outside and reintroduced ourselves to this most
brutal of weapons. It is good to get swinging once again. Have some
serious work with these planned in the coming weeks. Had two fun bouts
with these monsters.

5 Mountain axe..two bout with plenty of smashed hands. These are
really like the shillelaghs in the level of aggression that comes out.

6 E-tool…just one brutal round of shovel sparring. Brutal sums it up.

7 Navaja…two bouts using CS trainers. Been a while, great fun can’t
wait to do it again soon.

Overall fun session. Different energy, weapons vs unarmed, not less or
more just a different feel. Will go back to the mixed workout next
time around.

Session 2-13-11

Only Justin and I today…

Short session today.

We started out the session working on some interesting old Russian stick exercises and then applying them to the mountain axe.

Last week I bought a number of table runners to use as sashes or faja…so we worked quite a bit on our technique using the navaja and faja together. We used two methods, first the faja n the off hand and then the faja stretched between the hands with the navaja in the right hand. We did some bouting both with and without the sash.

Next up we worked on the recortes as a counter to both a straight thrust and a jiro. Once the recortes was finished we were throwing a rear leg fouette at the opponents midsection. Fun mixing savate and navaja play:)

We finished the session with some drills developed around the madeja ( skein of yarn, figure-8 ) A thrust comes in and the counter is made in the madeja pattern and a series of cuts follow all along the same pattern as the defender moves either to the outside or the inside of the attackers blade.

So a short session, about an hour and a half, but we got some good navaja work in.

Session 11-21-10

Last Wed Matt was out and we worked mainly on boxing but picked up the sparth axe for some work there.

Sunday

2 rounds shadow boxing
5 rounds boxing
3 rounds footwork

We went over our set of plays for the sparth axe and even did some bouting.

Today Matt came out and we…
2 rounds shadow boxing
3 rounds boxing
2 rounds of combat sambo

We went over some more material for sparth axe and bouted a bit. We then went over some basic German longsword material, mostly review but still fun since we have not done much of this.

We ended our session with a highly violent singlestick bout for the Broadsword League.

I am feeling a little beat up. Tomorrow is Thanksgiving so lots of food and no training for me.
