We reviewed out work with Von Auerswald’s manual up to and including¬†Das Schlosringen (the lock wrestling).

Thursday, David, Gary, Jason and I…

2 rounds shadow boxing
2 rounds boxing
Work on ground striking and seated boxing…on knees in distance boxing. Very rough but fun.
Again Von Auerswald’s wrestling…review and continuation onto plate 12 I think. Things working extremely well.
On Sunday, Chris and I…
work on coup di pied bas and chasse bas from savate. Straight lead, straight rear coup de pied bas and or chasse bas.
Worked on some clinch fighting, in particular defense again a Thai plum clinch.  Also worked options from under hook and over hook positions.

NEOHEMAS session 9-15-13

David, Gary, Jason and I today…

2 rounds shadow boxing
1 round focus mitts
2 rounds boxing
We then worked on the concept of rhythm in our boxing, getting our punches closer together rather than faster was one aspect of our rhythm training borrowing concepts from music theory…we also worked on breaking our rhythm as a tactic during sparring. Last for our striking was a little work from the clinch, tying up the arms to clear a path for heavy body and back of the head shots.
Our grappling today was Von Auerswald again…reviewing the first series and getting into the Durchlauffen and Arm Winding this time. Great deal of fun…will continue with this.

NEOHEMAS session 9-12-13

Gary, Jason, Sophia and I today…Sophia is 10 so she had to skip af good deal of what we did but she still got her feet more than a little wet.

2 round shadow boxing
1 round focus mitts
2 rounds boxing
2 rounds savate
2 rounds partnered footwork drill
Since this is our sambo and am wrestling off season we decided to work a different style and jumped in to Fabian Von Auerswald’s manual from 1539:
This is a manual that I have worked with on and off since around 1998 when Pete Kautz first sent me a copy of it. I have not touched it for about a year and I think this whole year with a strong focus on sambo has helped me get in tune with my grappelarity(tm). We only went over a small portion but something must have clicked upstairs, everything was clear and I was seeing cognate techniques and concepts easier than ever. The guys seemed to enjoy it as well.
Sophia got a chance to review her sambo lessons and show off some of her slick moves on her old man. She is really getting better each time we train which is very nice to see.

NEOHEMAS session 9-8-13

Everyone canceled today so I grabbed my 10 year old daughter Sophia and took her next door to beat me up.

A while back I saw a Russian sambist who lives in Scotland named Vadim Kolganov was making clips of him teaching his young son sambo. A few weeks ago I started teaching my youngest daughter straight from these videos. She has really been enjoying them and they are nicely put together lessons so overall I am pretty happy. Yesterday was her 5th lesson. Here is a clip of the Vadim’s 5th lesson on youtube:
What is interesting to me is that she really has nothing to fall back on as far as martial technique or even preconceived notion of what she should be doing so she only has what I have shown her at her disposal and she really uses it.
10 year old girls can only get thrown by full grown men for a set amount of time before the headache sets in, so after a brief rest and dinner, we went back out and worked on Angelo’s Regimental broadsword work as set out by the Cateran Society…our focus this time was on inside guard and outside guard, online stance and offline stance.

NEOHEMAS Session 9-1-13

Chris, Gary, Jason and I today…

I was not feeling all the energetic or even healthy for this session so we focused a good deal on technique. I would have much preferred to get a good solid workout in but just could not swing it on Sunday.
We started with shadowboxing and focus glove work then progressed into working on mechanics for the straight rear and a rear leg round kick eventually progressing into a this combo – straight lead> straight rear with a side step>rear leg chasse to the gut>spinning back kick or spinning backfist depending on the distance.
Not sure if I felt more like a sloth or a slug so I chose this picture to describe my workout.
