Session 9-25-11

Just Matt and I today…

2 round shadowboxing
4 rounds boxing
1 round savate
1 round partnered footwork drill
1 round freestyle footwork
We then worked on our Russian fisticuff skills with various drills…always a good time working on fisticuffs, very loose and a nice flowing feeling that compliments are normal boxing routine quite well. We hit on the half round blows from the eight angles of attack.

On with our kurtkas for some sambo…

1 round grip work
2 rounds freestyle sambo

We ended a bit early today but worked hard to get there.

Session 9-18-11

Just me and a new guy, Mathew today…

His interest at this time is on the Irish material so whenever he comes we will be sure to adjust the training accordingly. He has a fencing background so he looked comfortable with a weapon in his hand and already knew how to make his body do what he wanted it to, which was nice. Much easier to train someone who already has a background like that.

We stuck with the basics, stance, grip, parries and blocks and basic strikes. We will get into the grappling and boxing in the Irish style after a few more sessions. If all goes as planned we are going to do an Irish only class every other Thursday night. So if the idea of smacking each other with shillelaghs appeals to you and you are int he area, come on out and join us

Session 9-11-11

Just Chris and I today…

2 rounds shadow boxing
2 rounds boxing
3 rounds savate
No safety gear except for mouth guards for the sparring today. We just relied on control, been a while since we have done that. It was refreshing not to be burdened with gloves weigh down the hands and getting in the way and headgear blocking vision and making your head larger target.

We then went over basics with the shillelagh, various methods of defense using either end of the stick and dealing with leg attacks before some simple one step sparring drills. Chris is a lefty so there is always a bit of a challenge there trying to convert everything over to work for him…but I have had quite a few left handers that I have trained so it is not too much extra work…it does make for some interesting bouting as well. I can see that once Chris gets a better feel for the weapon we are all in for a tough time.

A shorter session but we still managed to eat up an hour and a half.

Session 9-4-11

Chris, Matt and I today…

2 rounds of shadow boxing for warm up.
We then went into some clinch work, making room with a shoulder bump to sneak in an short uppercut or shovel hook. We worked with Dempsey’s mechanics again with the elbow and with some work on shovel hooks to the body and the head, we even paused and watched Dempsey vs Sharkey…great shovel hook to the head KO!
2 rounds 3 count cadence drill
2 rounds freestyle footwork
2 rounds feed and follow footwork.

Next out came the shillelaghs, we went over some of the basics for Chris who has not done a lot of the weapon work. After 15 minutes or so we each fought two bouts. Since I had the mats up we had only one rule…keep it standing. As always, rough stuff but great fun.

We ended the session with some bouting using the dussack, again after some work on the basics for Chris.
