Session 1-30-2011

Chris, Justin, Matt and I today (Justin was late and missed the first half or so). A little warmer this week thanks to temps in the 20’s and a very small but potent space heater.

2 rounds shadow boxing
2 rounds boxing
2 rounds savate

On with the jackets to work on sambo. We reviewed our last session and worked on the falling then sitting armbar once again than another throw that I do not even remotely know the name of:)

We talked for a bit and did a bit of work with mismatched weapons then jumped right into some messer plays. Roughly a half hour spent there. We finished up with some work using the short Irish cudgel or kippen. Our main focus here was on methods of attack and power generation. We also played a bit with a spring sap and loaded butt.

New e-tool clip

It was too cold for a training session today but I did manage to get outside and film a short flourish with the e-tool.

Session 1-16-11

Just Matt and I today. It was a real cold one in the training area!

For warmth we threw on our kurtki and went right into sambo to try and get warm.
We did two rounds of off/balance grip work and then went right into work on the falling armbar. We spent about an hour on this. This was a different version of a similar move we had done in the past. I got it from Vadim Kolganov…you can see him doing it here:

After we worked on this we went back and worked our old variation and discovered that whatever our problem was int eh past with this move (it always seemed not to flow) were corrected by working on this variation.

We ended the session working on some shillelagh, and mountain axe along with some Russian stick exercises.

Due to the brutal temp we ended on time this week.

New Logos

As you can see above, I tinkered with the logo a bit, nothing major but I just got sick of seeing that same blue blob up there everytime I posted.

I also created an official facebook page for our group:

This sports the other new logo I was playing with:

Session 1-9-11

Chris, Matt and I today…
It was not warm.
We warmed up with 2 rounds of shadow boxing.

We worked for about a half hour on striking with the main concept being controlling both distance and circling to the outside and what to do once you get there with your kicks and punches.

Next up weapons. Chris has not done a lot of weapon work with us so we started out with some basics to get him up to speed…first the Navaja!
First we went over our basic stance and why we stood that way…we followed up with a few basic attacks then some work on foists, jiro, contra jiro and my favorite recortes.

We ended the session with some work on singlestick. Since we are forced indoors by the weather and out ceiling is relatively low, we used 24″ rattan and worked on more of a cutlass length weapon. Our main focus was the hanging guard for this session, New for Chris and a nice review for Matt and I. We ended up with a few bouts using the 2′ singlesticks with baskets…very strange and not all the pleasant really but a good introduction.

Session 1-2-11

Chris, Matt and I today…
2 rounds shadow boxing
2 rounds boxing
2 rounds kick sparring (kicks only)
2 rounds savate
2 rounds partnered footwork
1 round heavy bag

Definitely a cold one in the training area for this workout. Wanted to get to some grappling and weapon work…one outta two ain’t so bad. Grappling skipped this week.

Our weapon segment this session was again the nice indoor short weapon….messer. I snatched up a copy of this:
We got through about half of it in this one session and will save the second half of the material for next week. Definitely worth picking up.

On Friday Chris was out and we sparred with some decent intensity and worked the pads.
