Session 10-17-10

Justin and I today…

2 rounds shadow boxing
3 rounds boxing sparring
1 round focus gloves
1 round heavy bag
1 round floor bag
1 round partnered footwork drill
1 round free style footwork

During our boxing we worked quite a bit on getting into Carpentiers guard and keeping in a mirror stance…1st round I did this and the second, Justin did. The result was a lot of movement but not much landing, great defensive position. A bit weak ont eh offensive side but well worth working on. 3rd round we both used more of a Dempsey active method and mixed it up a bit.

My hip was still a bit sore from last week so no grappling this time around.

We broke out the long sticks for some JdP…the first time is quite a while. Fun but taxing if you have not been keeping up with it and we definitely have not. Of course now that the weather has turned south we will most likely have to wait until the spring before we dig back into this.

Session 10-10-10

Just Matt and I today…

2 rounds of shadow boxing
4 rounds of boxing sparring
2 rounds focus mitts
Review of last weeks material…fighting in the clinch. Head butts, making space for uppercuts, forearm strike (like football blocks) to create space for uppercut, knee bumps, shoulder strikes. Very dirty boxing:) Boxing our way out of a Thai plumb clinch.

We threw our kurtki on and did some striking while being grabbed. One person grabs the jackets and jerk you around while you throw shots at their head and body around, in between and under their arms. Great work but rough!

We kept our jackets on and went right into sambo…topic for the day was inside leg reap and scarf hold. We first reviewed the back trip material and the front body drop throw then right into the inside leg reap and scarf hold. Things went very well until one take down by Matt on me ended up missing the mats. I hit the hardwood floor left hip first with Matt’s weight on top driving me even harder into the floor. I missed landing on a kettlebell by about three inches. I suspect I avoided at least a fractured hip something or other there:)

We went on a little longer but my hip was in a sad way but still got over two hours of training in. I had planned on getting a few things down on video…some of the sparth axe material we had been working on and some of the mountain axe but without a third person to play camera man it will have to wait until next week.

Session 10-4-10

Justin, Matt and I today…

2 rounds of shadow boxing
2 rounds of three count drill
1 round heavy bag
We then went into some extremely violent (even for me) clinch work. Fighting out of the clinch was the goal this time around, making space to land some clean uppercuts and hooks. Using shoulder bumps, forearm jams and elbow as well as leg bumps to accomplish this.

We also worked a great deal on head butts using the focus mitts. We also worked some of the clinch work with the mitts and some boxing defense again grabs and tackles. My head is sore today, not from the concussion but from the slaps against the pads, guess I should have let my hair grow out for this.

Definitely some great clinch work was done, looking forward to doing more next week.

We ended the session this week with the navaja once again. We went over the basics of using the faja (sash) and then did two bouts each, blade and sash vs same.

We ended just a week bit over two hours in, a fairly short session tis time around.
